Grants Eligibility

The Tijerina Foundation provides grants to nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations as indicated by Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Organizations eligible for grant support from the Tijerina Foundation must operate and/or provide programming and services to people living in these south Texas counties

  • Cameron County
  • Hidalgo County
  • Starr County
  • Willacy County

Grant funding is not available for programs or projects outside this four-county geographic area.

Grants will not be considered for the following purposes:

  • Individuals
  • Political or legislative causes
  • Debt service
  • To establish a foundation, trust or interest-bearing account.

Grant proposals are welcome at any time throughout the year.

Grant Application Guidelines

The Tijerina Foundation annually evaluates the changing needs of the four county service area to identify programs and initiatives from among the grant applications which best serve those then-existing needs and which best match the Foundation’s mission. The Foundation exercises wide latitude in awarding grants, but generally, strong consideration is given to the following factors:

  • grant requests for specific initiatives (with defined starting and ending dates, targeted goals, identifiable beneficiaries, and measurable results) are favored over requests for “general operating funds” (for salaries and administrative costs) and “brick and mortar” requests (for equipment or construction of buildings and facilities);
  • grant applicants serving a broader segment of the valley-wide population are favored over applicants serving only a limited segment of the population;
  • grants providing vital or unique services not otherwise available are favored over grants for services already offered by other organizations;
  • previously unfunded grant applicants are generally favored over previously funded grantees except where the prior grantees’ programs support on-going and vital needs;
  • grant applicants with a proven record of sustained funding are favored over applicants with no prior history and/or no proof of future funding viability;
  • grant applicants providing complete and accurate applications are favored over applicants providing incomplete or inaccurate records and over prior grantees failing to provide required post-grant reports;
  • grant applicants with stable leadership, active board of director oversight, and strong fiscal controls are favored over applicants unable to prove such effective stewardship;
  • organizations whose grant applications expressly affirm that they serve their beneficiaries without regard to gender, race, national origin, religious preference or sexual orientation

How it Works

How to submit a Letter of Inquiry

The Foundation accepts inquiry letters on an ongoing basis throughout the year, though the letter is not required to make a formal grant application request.

Upon receiving your inquiry letter, the Foundation will either invite you to submit a formal application or deny your request at that time.

An invitation from the Foundation requesting a full grant proposal is not intended, and should not be construed, as an indication of ensuing grant approval.

Letters of Inquiry may be submitted by mail to:
